Police: Hwy 100 reopened after welfare check suspect rams squad cars

Authorities said there is no threat to the general public.

A 48-year-old St. Paul man is in custody after a 4-hour standoff with Edina Police at around 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

Highway 100 has reopened after Edina Police were called to a welfare check at Bredensen Park for a person in a pickup truck. The person who notified police reported that there were two people inside a running vehicle.

When police went to check on the vehicle, the passenger got out but the driver reversed the truck and repeatedly rammed two squad cars to exit the park, authorities said.

A pursuit ensued and the driver crashed near Highway 100 and Vernon Ave., police said.

Police said the driver was not cooperating and they set up a perimeter to negotiate. 

The driver was taken into custody.

Authorities closed both sides of Highway 100 and Vernon Ave. at Highway 100 due the situation.

Authorities said there is no threat to the general public.
