BURNSVILLE, Minn. — Missing a boa constrictor in the south metro? It's your lucky day.

Burnsville Police Captain Matt Smith says a driver had to swerve to miss the 5- to 6-foot-long snake Monday night at about 5 p.m. The driver called police to the intersection of McAndrews Road and Nicollet Avenue South.

"The snake ended up up on the median there, you can see in the picture," Smith said. "And our officer, who is much more gutsy than I am, decided to pick it up."

Burnsville police posted on Twitter that they found a python, but they were quickly corrected. They now say it is a Colombian red tail boa constrictor.

Smith said animal control now has custody of the snake. They believe it is a pet.

"We'd like to find the owner," Smith said.

If they don't find the snake's home within five days, he said, they will look for someone to adopt it.

To claim the snake, or to offer helpful information, call Burnsville Police Dispatch 651-322-2323 or animal control at 952-894-DOGS.
