MINNEAPOLIS — A firefighter was injured Thursday afternoon while battling a house fire in Minneapolis.

Around 12:15 p.m. fire crews responded to a report of a fire in a 2 ½ story home located near E. 22nd St. and Elliot Ave.

When crews got there they found heavy smoke and fire on the first floor.

The fire extended to the second floor, the attic space, and burned through the roof, according to a news release from the Minneapolis Fire Department (MFD.)

The Red Cross was called for two adults and three children who had gotten out of the home. A Metro Transit bus was needed as a temporary shelter for the residents because of the dangerous low tempertures and wind chill.

Eventually, crews were able to extinguish the fire.

One firefighter was taken to a hospital with an injured shoulder. No further details have been released about the severity of the injury.

Following the fire, MFD officials deemed the house uninhabitable and said the building will be "boarded up," according to the release.

The cause is under investigation.
