LE SUEUR COUNTY, Minn. — Two people died early on Sunday morning after a fire at their home in Montgomery Township, officials said.

According to a press release, the Le Sueur County Sheriff's Office got a report of a structure fire on Jindra Lane. A woman in the house told officials the house was on fire and she and her husband were trapped inside.

Multiple crews, including the Montgomery and Le Center fire departments and sheriff's deputies, responded to the location. The first deputy on the scene said they attempted to enter the house but were driven back by heat and heavy smoke.

After donning protective gear, firefighters entered the home and found a man and a woman in the kitchen area. Crews took the two out of the house and brought them outside for emergency life-saving measures. Despite the efforts of medical crews, both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials identified the victims as Roman Jindra, 76, and Betty Jindra, 73.

Firefighters were able to put the fire out and vented smoke from the home.

The Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office will autopsy the bodies to determine their cause and manner of death in the coming days.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, according to the State Fire Marshall.
