NEW BRIGHTON, Minn. — One person is in the hospital and a dog was killed in an apartment fire Thursday afternoon in New Brighton.
The New Brighton Department of Public Safety said the fire happened around 1:30 p.m. at an apartment complex in the 800 block of West County Road D. The fire began on the first floor and quickly extended to the second and third floor of the building.
One of the tenants was transported to HCMC by paramedics for smoke inhalation and burns. Their condition is unknown.
Five other residents were evaluated at the scene by paramedics and released.
Authorities say around 30 units were impacted by the fire, displacing about 60 people. The Minnesota Red Cross confirmed that they're assisting 27 adults and 14 children with lodging, clothing, medication and/or food.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Officials say the building is equipped with a fire alarm system, but as a result of how old the structure is, there are no fire suppression sprinklers.
