MINNEAPOLIS -- Tornadoes in October are a rare sight for us in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

In Minnesota, since 1950, we have seen only 28 tornadoes in October.

In Wisconsin, where the records go back a little longer.

Since 1884 there have been only 31 tornado sightings for the entire month of October.

For both states, we have about a 1 percent chance to see tornadoes during this month compared to the rest of the year.

Tornado Alley is where most of the tornadoes occur annually across the United States.

We are just on the northern edge of this zone, but when conditions are right in autumn, tornadoes are possible like we had across southern Minnesota about two weeks ago.

On September 20th we had 16 tornadoes go across the state which is much higher than average of just over 1.

If you are wondering when we usually see the most tornadoes in our area, that occurs in the late spring, early summer. June is usually the most tornadic month for our area.
