Red Bull brings Flugtag back to St. Paul

This year's Red Bull Flugtag will take place Saturday, September 7 at Harriet Island Regional Park.

ST PAUL, Minnesota — Red Bull Flugtag is soaring back to the Twin Cities for the second time ever.

Tuesday morning, St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter literally dropped in for the press conference. Mayor Carter, along with others including pro-snowmobile rider Levi LaVallee, skydived into Harriet Island Regional Park for the announcement.

Red Bull Flugtag is a human-powered flying machine competition. Flugtag means "flying day" in German. The event consists of 50 teams launching their homemade air crafts off a 30-foot-high platform and seeing how far they can go on the Mississippi River.

This year's Red Bull Flugtag will take place Saturday, September 7 at Harriet Island Regional Park.

"Red Bull and St. Paul have teamed up for nearly a decade to create unique, family friendly events in our capital city," Mayor Carter said.

The first time Red Bull Flugtag was in St. Paul, KARE 11 reported that about 90,000 people attended the event. An Inver Grove Heights team even set a new world record of 207 feet but a team in California beat that record three years later with 258 feet.

"Once you get height into things and it's jumping, I start perking up," LaVallee said, who was a celebrity judge for the event in 2010.

Judges score the teams of five not only on distance but creativity and showmanship.

"I'm hoping to see a Minnesota Viking theme or a Juicy Lucy. Something out there just to give a little Minnesota flavor," LaVallee said. "This event screams fun from top to bottom or from the 30-foot platform down the Mississippi. There's going to be some screaming."

Since 1991, Red Bull Flugtag has made 162 stops around the world.

The deadline to submit an application is June 26. All team members must be at least 18-years-old.
