STERLING TOWNSHIP, Wis. - The Polk County Sheriff's Office says a man was severely injured while apparently making explosives on Tuesday.

Deputies were called to a home in rural Sterling Township Tuesday evening at about 8:15 on a report of a man who had an injured hand. The report said that the man had "blown his hand off" while possibly making explosives.

When deputies got there they found the man with injuries consistent with that report. He also had burns on other parts of his body. He was flown to Regions Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Deputies found suspicious chemicals in the home and the bomb squad was called to assist. Bomb technicians determined that the chemicals present were stable, but when mixed together, would make explosive material.

The chemicals were collected and the incident is under investigation. The man's condition is not known at this time.
