St. Paul police investigate 3rd homicide in a week

Officers responded to a call of a fire, but instead found a "gravely injured" woman.

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Police in St. Paul say they are investigating the third homicide this week in the city.

Officers were called to a residence on the 1400 block of Payne Avenue at about 10 a.m. on Saturday on the report of a fire. When they arrived, instead of a fire, crews found a "gravely injured" woman. St. Paul fire medics pronounced her dead at the scene.

The woman's husband was in the home and was arrested on suspicion of murder.

The Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office will officially identify the cause of death and the victim.

In addition to Saturday's suspected homicide, a 21-year-old man was fatally shot on Sunday, and a 26-year-old man was fatally shot on Thursday. No arrest has been made in Thursday's shooting.

St. Paul PD spokesperson Steve Linders said on Sunday that the homicides are taxing the department's resources.

"It's not OK, our officers are working hard, our gang units are working hard and unfortunately so is our homicide unit," Linders said.

He asked the public to put down their guns.

"Stop shooting one another," Linders said. "People in this city are thinking it's OK to indiscriminately use guns to solve their problems. It's not OK."

Police say they are still looking into whether the two shooting cases from last Sunday and Thursday are connected in any way.
