INVER GROVE HEIGHTS, Minn. - A woman is hospitalized after the SUV she and her infant were riding in was struck by a group of teens in a stolen truck fleeing police Thursday.

Inver Grove Heights Police say an officer on patrol spotted the pickup, which had been reported stolen from a gas station in Eagan earlier in the day, around 9 a.m. That officer began pursuit but called it off when the driver of the stolen truck fled north in the southbound lanes of Highway 55.

A few minutes later a different patrol officer came upon a crash scene at the intersection of 80th Street and Barnes Avenue. Witnesses told the officer that several young people had fled on foot from one of the vehicles, which turned out to be the stolen pickup.

Inside the other vehicle police found an infant, who was apparently uninjured, and the child's mother, who had suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries. She was extricated from the vehicle and taken to a local hospital.

The driver of the stolen pickup, a 15-year-old from Sioux Falls, SD, was arrested on the scene without incident. The truck was occupied by five other juveniles, four of whom were taken to Regions Hospital to be checked out for injuries ranging from broken bones to cuts and lacerations. The remaining teen was taken to a juvenile shelter pending the arrival of parents.

Police say the 15-year-old driver is being booked into the Dakota County Juvenile Detention Center on probable cause criminal vehicular operation, fleeing a police officer and possession of stolen property.
