First look at Allianz Field in St. Paul

KARE 11 gets a first look at Allianz Field in St. Paul, the future home of the MInnesota United soccer team.

MINNEAPOLIS - If you’ve driven on Interstate 94 between Minneapolis and St. Paul you probably have noticed new construction of Allianz Field, which will be the future home of the Minnesota United soccer team.

“Right now we are in the fortunate position to say this project is on schedule and is on budget. You have seen the structural steel frame start to rise up from the ground. Right now we are about 50-percent through structural steel construction and about 60-percent through precast construction,” said Greg Huber, a construction executive with Mortenson.

“We'll be topping out structural steel in the middle of June. The big aluminum seating on the south end will start on April 20th. We're in the process of putting together – manufacturing the PTFE skin, so there is a translucent skin that goes around the perimeter of the building. The skin was chosen for its durability and it's considered a super fabric. That will start going on the building in the beginning of May which is a big deal. Our big target on this project is October 17th to have grass get delivered and planted at Allainz field, ”added Huber.

The project is expected to be complete in February 2019, which has Dr. William McGuire, the owner of Minnesota United, smiling.

“Pictures are one thing...tangible things you can reach out and touch and really participate in I really think bring a whole new dimension," said McGuire.
