ST. PAUL - Stokley Williams of Mint Condition is ready to make a statement. People who recognize his voice know him from leading the popular St. Paul R&B band, Mint Condition.
But Stokley, the group's lead singer and drummer, is striking a new chord with his solo album, "Introducing Stokley."
Stokley knows the only thing constant is change and he is evolving.
Despite the release of his solo album in June, Stokley is back home in Minnesota kicking off a tour.
On Sunday, the St. Paul native will perform at the Ordway Concert Hall. Tickets are still available for the 7:30 p.m. show.
He says fans have asked if the performance will be a play. Stokely says it has some theatrical elements.
"It is electric. We are switching through different genres and eras and time in music," Stokely said. "I am telling my story and my journey. The evolution through music. My influences and where I sit inside of all of that stuff."
This is Stokley's first time promoting an album without "his fellas" from Mint Condition. He said now is the time for him to develop in different areas of his life musically.
Stokely is scheduled to perform at the free concert series leading up to Super Bowl 52. He will also perform with Mint Condition.
A few familiar faces, including Jesse Laron from the Voice and MPLS' Ashley Commodore are touring and singing back up for Stokely.
Stokley, a St. Paul native and graduate of Central High, said he wants to see the Vikings in the Super Bowl.
"That would be icing on the cake," Stokely said.
