MINNEAPOLIS — A man was shot and killed after police say there may have been an attempted carjacking Friday afternoon in north Minneapolis.

When police arrived at the scene of the potential carjacking, they found the man in his 20s with life-threatening gunshots lying in an alley. Emergency crews worked to save him but he died at the scene.

Officials say the person killed is believed to be one of two people who attempted to carjack a black Mercedes just after 3:30 p.m. on the 2700 block of Golden Valley Road on Friday.  A second person that police believe was involved in the crime, a 21-year-old man, was taken into custody as a potential suspect and booked into the Hennepin County Jail.

Minutes after police responded to the Golden Valley Road scene, police said, another man in his 20s who was in the Mercedes in the attempted crime, arrived at North Memorial Medical Center with potentially life-threatening injuries. An unhurt 2-year-old was in the car with him.

During a Friday news conference, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara said police believe two individuals dressed in dark clothing attempted to carjack the Mercedes in an alleyway. He went on to say that the investigation indicates that both attempted carjacking suspects fired a gun at some point during the incident. O'Hara said he also believes the driver of the Mercedes may have been armed and may have also fired.

“I am grateful for the outstanding police work of our responding Minneapolis Police Officers,” said Chief O’Hara said in a press release. “They took quick action and attempted to save a life while also making an arrest of a gunman and recovering handguns.”

Minneapolis tracks carjackings across the city. Year-to-date, Minneapolis is down compared to this time last year.

That data shows 22 carjackings have happened so far this year, while through the same time last year, there were 36.
