PLYMOUTH, Minn. — Plymouth's Armstrong High School was selected as one of the first schools in the nation to perform the new high school adaptation of the award-winning Broadway musical, "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child."

The school was awarded licensing after winning the "Wands at the Ready" contest, put on by Broadway Licensing Global. Armstrong is among the first 29 schools in the country that are permitted to produce the new high school edition.

According to Playbill.com, each school was chosen based on their contest applications, stating why they believe their school or community would be the most "magical" place to debut the play. Broadway officials said each of the schools will perform their respective productions between Oct. 15 and Nov. 10.

Playbill announced the move to develop a high school edition of J.K. Rowling's original script in September of 2023, shortening its runtime and adjusting "highly technical effects" to allow for shows "with a variety of budget levels."

"We can’t wait to see how students embrace their creativity and bring the magic of the wizarding world to life on their school stages. It's extremely exciting for us all," said producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender in a statement last September.

The story adaptation was refined by the play's original creative team, including playwright Jack Thorne, director John Tiffany and Friedman and Callender, and was approved by "Harry Potter" creator and author, Rowling.

The stage adaptation takes place 19 years after the end of the book series and chronicles the friendship between Potter's son Albus and son of rival Draco Malfoy, Scorpius, in their first year attending Hogwarts.

If your school is interested in licensing "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child," you can apply for licensing opportunities through Broadway Licensing Global on a rolling basis.

Wisconsin's Waukesha High School and Iowa's Northeast Community High School were also selected.
