Twin Cities breweries celebrate International Women's Day

Emancipating Eve, Tenacious She, Peachy Kween - these are just some of the beers this year.

MINNEAPOLIS — The average pint of craft beer costs $6-7, but the names of this year's International Women's Day-themed beers across the Twin Cities? Priceless.

"Naming a beer is almost as difficult as naming a child I will say," said Danielle Pallas, who handles marketing for 56 Brewing in northeast Minneapolis. "We landed on Tenacious She."

Pallas says the tart IPA sips like a sour and is hoppy yet flavored with passion fruit, oranges and guava.

Meanwhile at Modist Brewing, located in the North Loop, Sophia Missaghi and Bri Smith brewed up Emancipating Eve. Missaghi says the apple ale uses juice from Number 12 Cider down the street.

"Oh yeah, I came up with the name," Missaghi said with a laugh.

There's also Peachy Kween at Forgotten Star Brewing in Fridley, In All Places at Utepils Brewing in Minneapolis, Goddess of Hops at Lift Bridge Brewing Co. in Stillwater, and more. Those in the industry say brewery participation in International Women's Month or Day beer has risen in recent years.

"This year really went off," Missaghi said. "My friend did one with Montgomery Brewing it's called - it's from the Barbie movie. Rojo Dojo.

"It's definitely gained traction at least from our understanding," Pallas said. "It's something we have only done in more recent years, and to have a place and a day for women in the industry to shine and to celebrate all of the work that we do is sometimes behind the scenes."

Tenacious She is a collaboration with the women of Dangerous Man, which is still producing beer although its taproom recently closed. Pallas says one of the 56 Brewing owners, and their part-owner, are women.

"To create a beer with such an amazing company that is also women owned is really exciting for us," she said.

They hired graphic designer Sabrina Peitz, and Modist hired Xee Reiter. Both are women of color.

"With 56, it's really cool to bring someone like myself on," Peitz said. "I'm not involved in the brewery community otherwise, so it's cool to have these different communities of women come together."

These breweries are not just raising a glass to women, but giving back. $1 of every 4-pack sold of Tenacious She will go to the League of Women Voters Minneapolis, and a portion of Emancipating Eve proceeds will go to Minnesota Peacebuilding Leadership Institute.
