James Corden is getting ready to host the Tonys, and it sounds like he might try to bring his popular "Carpool Karaoke" segment to the celebrate awards show -- but without the "carpool" element.
Sitting down with his time-slot rival, Seth Meyers, for Wednesday's Late Night, Corden revealed that he has a great idea for how to fully utilize the wall-to-wall talent at this year's star-studded ceremony.
"I thought, 'Why don't we have a big, sort of karaoke-type sing-along in the Beacon theater?' Because there's all these incredibly talented people in there," explained the Late Late Show host, who sat down for the interview decked out in merchandise branded with his competing talk show's logo.
"So I might go out and give them some drinks and then see if I can get, like, Barbra Streisand to sing something," Corden continued, adding that the massive karaoke spectacular would happen only "during the commercial breaks" and before the ceremony starts.
"We'll have our own show that no one [at home] will see," Corden said.
"This is a great idea, but here's my genuine fear -- if Barbra Streisand is singing, and then you say, 'No, you have to stop because the show's coming back on, [everyone is] going to be mad at you," Meyers warned.
"Well, I think if I get Barbra Streisand to sing, I won't care," Corden replied. "That's not going to happen, though. The truth is it's more likely going to be me and my dad singing 'You've Lost That Loving Feeling.'"
The 37-year-old British comic, who admitted that he was "very nervous" about hosting the prestigious awards show, also revealed that his high-profile gig didn't come in handy when trying to snag some free tickets to Hamilton, the hottest Broadway show in decades.
"I was gonna get my parents tickets. They fly in on Friday, I thought, 'Oh, I'll get them tickets to Hamilton. I'm the host of the Tonys, I'll be able to pull some strings," Corden recounted.
"If anyone should be able to, it's you," Meyers agreed.
"$1,500 each!" Corden responded, angrily. "No, I'm alright. I'm good."
While Hamilton tickets might be out of reach for the vast majority of people in the world, Corden explained that this was one of the reasons that the Tonys are the best awards show around -- they bring the magic of Broadway to the masses. "On Sunday night you're going to get to see a seven-minute extract of this phenomenal show, in your sweatpants at home," Corden marveled. The Tony Awards air Sunday at 8 p.m. ET/PT, 7 p.m. CT on CBS.
On Monday's Late Late Show, Corden teamed up with Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda -- as well as Broadway icon Audra McDonald, Modern Family's Tyler Ferguson, and 30 Rock star Jane Krakowski -- for a Broadway-themed "Carpool Karaoke," that was absolutely mind-blowing.
