FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. — When you mention Minnesota to people across the country, there are a few things that come to mind automatically: our winters, our lakes, the Vikings, and, of course, our accents — you betcha.
So as we prepare to gather for the Great Minnesota Get-Together, don'tcha know, what better time to decide on the most Minnesota phrase ever?
Starting Wednesday, Aug. 21, and continuing throughout the first week of the Minnesota State Fair, KARE 11 viewers are invited to vote below in the Gosh Darn Minnesota Phrase-Off bracket.
Here are the winners (in bold) from the opening round:
- "You betcha" vs. "That's different"
- "Oh ya, no, for sure" vs. "For Pete's sake"
- "Just gonna scootch right past ya" vs. "Oh fer cute"
- "Bag" (but pronounced in Minnesotan) vs. "Duck duck gray duck"
- "Ope!" vs. "Don'tcha know"
- "There's always next year" vs. "Oh I s'pose"
- "Uff da" vs. "Pop"
- "Jeez Louise" vs. "Whelp" (with a slap of the knee)
Voting for each round lasts two days. The winning phrase scootches right past the others and will be announced ahead of the second weekend of the Minnesota State Fair.
