Minnesota-made ‘cooling’ vests are a hit at the fair

The cooling vests are made by a family in Bloomington, Minnesota.

FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. — The Bloomington company, Glacier Tek has been around for 25 years. Their products are a hit when the temperature get hot.

When the heat hit Minnesota on Monday, it didn’t slow people down from going to the State Fair. A local company’s cooling product is coming in handy for them though. Medical experts say sweat releases heat from the body when it evaporates. When humidity is high, sweat won’t evaporate as quickly.

So, Glacier Tek came up with an easy way to cool you down.

The variety of vests has been keeping people cool for 25 years. Owner Roxanne Best says some of their top customers are construction workers, police officers, the FBI, and people living with body temperature regulating issues like Multiple Sclerosis.

How does it work?

There are cooling packs that slide into the vests. The packs are filled with a special technology that keeps them cool for 2.5 hours. One they melt, they can “recharge” in a cool bucket of water for 30 minutes. The liquid looks like snow when it’s cold and melts clear.

Glacier Tek also makes products for pets, too. All of their products are made in the United States, but primarily in Minnesota.

“Knowing we are making an impact, that’s the best part,” Zack Best said.
