Minnesota State Fair boosts security for 2019

The Minnesota State Fair has a detailed security plan -- and this year, it will boost officers and security cameras

ST. PAUL - When you head to the State Fair this year, you may notice some security changes: More officers, more security cameras and bolstered gate security.

And behind the scenes, the security plan will also be evolving, according to State Fair General Manager Jerry Hammer.

"It's constantly being evaluated and changed," Hammer said. "The most important thing is prevention."

With the two recent mass shootings this month, Hammer acknowledged the public's concern about security measures — but he pointed out that the State Fair has always prepared vigorously for any situation.

"Sadly, this isn't new at all. I got an interview question from a few years ago that said exactly that -- 'due to the rash of mass shootings, what are you doing different?' That was from three years ago," Hammer said. "We're accustomed to this type of thing with security measures."

In addition to bolstered security at the fairgrounds, bag checks will remain in place — as they have for the past four years. A strict no-weapons policy also continues, and no fireworks or alcohol are allowed inside. All vehicles that enter the fairgrounds will also be inspected thoroughly.

And the overall emergency plan is broader than many realize.

"It deals with weather emergencies, medical emergencies, fires," Hammer said, to name a few. "Basically, anything that could possibly happen, we've researched it and have plans in place for it."
