State Fair gates open late Tuesday after storms

Fair officials said the gates will open late as staffers clean up from powerful storms that felled trees and knocked out power across the metro.

FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. — The Minnesota State Fair is swinging open the gates at 9 a.m. Tuesday after an uncertain start to the day as officials cleaned up storm damage and debris.

Fair officials told the public that some vendors and attractions might have a delayed opening but the gates would open at 9 a.m. Park and Ride lots and buses resumed service by 9:15 a.m.

The Fair said the Mighty Midway would re-open by 10:30 a.m., after the Kidway and Adventure Park opened by 10 a.m.

Monday night's storms knocked out power for almost 150,000 Twin Cities households, leaving many without electricity for hours. Then Tuesday morning, another round of storms complicated cleanup efforts and power restoration.

It is unclear if the fair's electricity - and loads of stored foods - were affected by the storms. Parking lots are reopened as of 8:40 a.m.
