Hanson celebrates 20 years of independent label with tour, 2 shows in Minneapolis

The three-piece band of brothers announced they'll play back-to-back nights in Minneapolis in October to kick off their "Underneath: Experience Tour."

MINNEAPOLIS — Low-rise, flared jeans, middle parts, bucket hats... boy bands?

It's definitely not 1997, but Hanson is definitely coming back.

The three-piece band of brothers announced they'll play back-to-back nights in Minneapolis in October to kick off their "Underneath: Experience Tour." The rash of shows across North America marks two decades since their third album, "Underneath," was released in 2004 — the first from their own independent label.

The tour comes in tandem with the release of a deluxe version of "Underneath," featuring two new recordings and seven rare tracks from their original recording sessions.

Tickets for the Hanson brothers' Oct. 3 and 4 shows with special guests Matthew Sweet and Phantom Planet at The Minneapolis Fillmore go on sale Friday, June 14.

Taylor, Isaak and Zac Hanson have a history with Minnesota, beginning back in 1997 when the brothers came to play the Minnesota State Fair while riding the wave of their sugary single "MMMBop." Before they took a larger stage the Hansons wandered into the KARE 11 State Fair newsroom and asked if we had a show they could play. Then main-anchor Paul Magers recognized the boys as his daughters were playing MMMBop non-stop, and arranged for them to play a handful of songs on the news and afterward.

It was a simple but awesome performance with Zac (then 11 years old) playing percussion on a cardboard box and Taylor and Isaac (14 and 16 respectively) chipping in on acoustic guitar. Their natural harmonies were apparent even back then.

Hanson returned to play the State Fair in 2013.
