MINNEAPOLIS — A sad week for this series as there is only one original film** being released in theaters, but there are some highly anticipated releases this week, so we may as well talk about them.
Looking at the upcoming release schedule and the most anticipated films of the year, this may be a theme for the upcoming Summer Blockbuster Season. For this week, if Maïwenn’s “Jeanne du Barry” isn’t enough to feed the hunger for an original movie, thankfully there are previously released original movies such as “Challengers,” “Late Night with the Devil,” and “La Chimera,” of which “Challengers” is taking the internet by storm and is outperforming the estimates.
There are also special screenings this weekend of "Macbeth" starring Ralph Fiennes and Indira Varma exclusively at the Landmark Lagoon Cinema and the re-release of "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace" for the 25th anniversary at the Alamo Drafthouse and most other theatres around the metro.
“Jeanne du Barry” (NR)
Jeanne is a working-class woman in France, hungry for the culture and experiences of the highest levels of society. Using her intelligence and beauty, she becomes the most infamous mistress of France’s King Louis XV. When she moves to Versailles, the court is scandalized and she is scorned by her noble contemporaries.
“Jeanne du Barry” is a collaborative project between France, Belgium, and the United Kingdom and is directed and co-written by Maïwenn. It also stars Maïwenn alongside Johnny Depp, Benjamin Lavernhe, Pierre Richard, Melvil Poupaud, and Pascal Greggory. This film is in French with English subtitles.
**We are considering this film, which received a seven-minute standing ovation at it’s Cannes Premiere in 2023, as an original because it doesn’t seem to be based on a memoir or biography, but we would love to hear your opinions on the classification.
In theaters: May 2 – Fathom Events
Runtime: 1 hour, 57 minutes
Showtimes by theater: AMC Eden Prairie, AMC Southdale, AMC Rosedale, AMC Classic Mounds View, AMC Coon Rapids, AMC Inver Grove, Emagine Willow Creek, Emagine Eagan, Emagine White Bear
“The Fall Guy” (PG-13)
Bringing “Barbenheimer” “enemies” Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt to the screen together, “The Fall Guy” follows a stuntman, coming off of an injury and working on his ex-girlfriend’s movie as he is tasked with locating the now-missing lead actor.
Consisting of an A-List supporting cast including, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Hannah Waddingham, Teresa Palmer, Stephanie Hsu, and Winston Duke, the film has been described as David Leitch’s love letter to stunt people; as well as a bit of a campaign for the Academy to add a stunt Oscar to the telecast.
**There is a slight debate happening on whether or not this can be considered an original movie since there was an Action Television series of the same name in the 80s, but the audiences being slightly different, so take that as you will.

“The Idea of You” (R)
Ahead of making a splash at this year’s South by Southwest Film Festival, “The Idea of You” broke the record for most watched trailer for any original streaming movie with 125 million global views across all platforms.
In an age where we are seeing the resurgence of romantic dramedy films, “The Idea of You” tells the story of a love affair between a single mother, played by Anne Hathaway, and a member of a popular boy band, played by Nicholas Galitzine. The Michael Showalter-directed film is based on the novel of the same name by Robinne Lee, which contrary to popular belief is not a Harry Styles fanfiction.
