Country maverick Sturgill Simpson to stop in Twin Cities Sept. 25

After promising he would only release five albums under his own name, Simpson has a new recording as Johnny Blue Skies, which drops July 12.

ST PAUL, Minn. — One of the things country music fans like about Sturgill Simpson is that he does things his own way.

Simpson, considered one of the godfathers of alt and independent country, will visit St. Paul and Roy Wilkins Auditorium on Sept. 25 on a fall tour to support his new album. And here's where things get very Sturgill-like: After promising he would only release five albums under his own name, Simpson made a new record as Johnny Blue Skies. The album, titled "Passage Du Desir," will drop July 12.

Tickets for Simpson's St. Paul show will also be procured via an unconventional process. Fans are asked to register on his website from now until Monday, June 10 before seats go on sale to help ensure the majority of tickets will go to them and not to brokers. Those registering will get early access to the artist presale, which opens Wednesday, June 12 at 10 a.m.

A limited number of tickets will be available for the general public on Friday, June 14, at 10 a.m. on Simpson's website — while supplies last.

The “Why Not? Tour” is Simpson’s first full road outing in more than four years. It includes 28 headlining dates that include stops at L.A.’s The Greek Theatre, Washington State’s The Gorge Amphitheatre, Lexington’s Rupp Arena, Chicago’s Salt Shed (two nights), Queens’ Forest Hills Stadium and Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena, along with the Roy Wilkins date.
