9 quick summer getaways in Minnesota

Not everybody has the budget for a big summer trip. Here are some places right here in MN to escape to this summer.

If you want to get away this summer but don't have a lot to spend, we have good news: there are plenty of awesome getaways right here in Minnesota.

KARE 11 Sunrise talked with Explore Minnesota to find some of the best spots to go this summer for a quick summer trip.

Otter Tail Lake by Allie Hoeft

1. Otter Tail County

Minnesota of course is known as the Land of 10,000 Lakes, and you'll find more than 1,000 in Otter Tail County. Located in West Central Minnesota, it's just a 2.5 drive from the metro. With so many lakes, there's no shortage of great fishing, swimming, kayaking and water-skiing. Learn more here.

2. Root River Trail communities

Do you like biking, hiking and paddling? Then you'll love the Root River Trail towns. The nine towns in southeast Minnesota run along the Root River State Bike Trail System. To plan your trip, click here.

3. Mississippi headwaters/Great River Road

The Mississippi River headwaters at Itasca State Park are a must-see destination, according to Explore Minnesota. Drive the Great River Road up from the metro, tracing the river as it flows. Make it a long weekend trip and stop along the way at some beautiful landmarks.

4. Lake of the Woods and the Northwest Angle

If you're an avid angler, Lake of the Woods is the vacation spot for you. "The Walleye Capital of the World" offers some of the best fishing around, in addition to plenty of other outdoor activities. Check it out here.

5. Voyageurs National Park

Not only is Minnesota lucky enough to have tons of beautiful state parks, we also have a national park! About four hours north of the metro, Voyageurs National Park offers incredible hiking and views. Over 40 percent of the park is water though, so if you own some kind of watercraft, you'll want to bring it!

Pipestone National Monument

6. Pipestone National Monument

A combination of nature and culture, the grounds of Pipestone National Monument are sacred to many people because the pipestone quarried there is carved into pipes used for prayer. The traditions continue there today, just a 3.5 hour drive from the metro!

7. Alexandria

Easy, affordable and fun...Alexandria is one of the best options for a quick family trip. Whether you want to camp outdoors, or enjoy some more comfort in a resort or hotel, you'll have plenty of options. You can also tour the award-winning Carlos Creek Winery! 8. Willmar Lakes area

The Willmar Lakes area in Kandiyohi County has more than 360 lakes and a variety of recreational opportunities, from activities on the water to biking and hiking trails. Just 90 miles west of the metro, you can find pretty much any outdoor activity here!
