MINNEAPOLIS--Nearly 350 children in our community are waiting for a mentor—2/3 them boys. The need for mentors has never been greater. This January, in honor of National Mentoring Month, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Twin Cities will work to match every one of the 350 children—age 8-12—currently on the waiting list with a safe, caring, adult mentor. If you’ve ever considered being a mentor or have resolved to make a positive impact on our community, this is the time to take the next step.
A recent national report The Mentoring Effect showed that young people who are at-risk for not completing high school, when matched with a mentor, were 55% more likely to not only graduate, but to then enroll in college. Youth mentored by a Big Brother or Big Sister are report they are
94% more likely to feel accepted by their peers
52% less likely to skip school
46% less likely to begin using an illegal drug
