MINNEAPOLIS - Call it '50 Shades of Green.'
The film, based on the racy book, "50 Shades of Grey," is projected to steam up the box office this weekend.
But it's the movie's merchandise – from blindfolds to sex toys – that is spurring business for retailers.
Retailers like Target and those as small as a bondage store in Minneapolis are carrying the film's provocative products.
"There is the buzz on YouTube and social media. Everybody keeps talking about it," said Bondesque owner, Adelina Sharku, who has noticed a spike in sales this month.
"We do receive phone calls. People are asking if this is the '50 Shades of Grey' store," Sharku said.
The lines carry items like bath oil, the official Christian Grey tie, blindfolds and, plainly put, sex toys.
"We have curious people who have heard about the book, who have heard about the movie, and they want to explore something new in their life," Sharku said, who added the most popular items are the blindfolds and the spanking ruler.
Target has received criticism on social media for their decision to carry the line, after a shopper in Tulsa, Oklahoma snapped a picture of the racy merchandise being sold next to children's toothbrushes.
A spokesperson for Target responded by saying the "50 Shades of Grey" products are not exclusive to Target and will be placed in the adult health area of the stores.
