Inaugural Christkindl Market kicks off in Minneapolis

The German-style holiday market will run for five weekends, starting on Nov. 22 through Dec. 22.

MINNEAPOLIS — A European Christmas tradition has touched down in Minneapolis' North Loop.

The sounds of "It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas" filled the air Friday night as hundreds enjoyed the inaugural Minneapolis Christkindl Market.

"It's one of the really fun traditions from where I come from," said Executive Director of the market Nadine Schaefer. "It's really about spending time with your loved ones and getting into the spirit."

Schaefer says the market features 30 vendors representing 15 countries, many from Europe. "They are interested in participating and showcasing their culture and their product," Schaefer added.

One vendor is Martin Przybylski, who sells glass-blown and hand-painted ornaments by artists in his home country of Poland.

"Everything is handmade in Poland, yes," Przybylski proudly stated. "We create with them the designs that you see right here on our booth."

The Christkindl market tradition dates back to the 1300s and features delicious European foods, including traditional German Nuremberg sausages. Despite its historical roots, Schaefer emphasized that the market is not religious in nature. "It's not religious at all, it's really community related. It's all about coming together and having fun."

Located at North Loop Green's 1-acre park, the German-style holiday market will run for five weekends, starting from November 22nd through December 22nd. Visitors can enjoy the festive atmosphere every Friday from 4-9pm, Saturday from 11am-9pm, and Sunday from 11am-7pm.

Each day of the market will feature live singing and dancing, adding to the joyful ambiance.
