Grow with KARE: Here's how to make spring bulb lasagna in a pot

Rather than red sauce and noodles, we're using spring bulbs and soil for a lasagna that is sure to please come spring.

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. — For a truly special spring bulbs display, you’ll need to think lasagna! What??

Lasagna as in layers… plant several different bulbs in layers for a professional look either right in the ground or in a container.

  1. Select the bulbs you'd like to plant.
  2. Choose a container that is at least 2-3" deeper than the depth at which you will plant your bulbs. Refer to the depth chart. Plastic, terra cotta, metal are all fine as long as there are drainage holes on the bottom.
  3. Add a 2" to 3" layer of moist potting soil to the bottom of the pot, making sure it is level and even.
  4. Place the largest bulbs first, such as tulips and alliums, on top of the soil, spacing them about 3-4 inches apart.
  5. Cover the first layer of bulbs with another layer of moist soil, at least 2-3 inches deep to reach the proper depth for your next bulb choice.
  6. Add the next layer of bulbs, such as daffodils, on top of the soil, but stagger them between the first layer of bulbs to create a fuller look.
  7. Repeat until you have filled the container.
  8. After the final layer of bulbs, such as crocus, cover with a final layer of moist soil, about 2 inches deep.
  9. If the soil is a bit dry, water the container until the soil is moist but not waterlogged.
  10. Top off the container with mulch, pea gravel or grit for a finished look sand to help keep critters away.

Place the container in a cool, dark place, such as a garage or basement or even a refrigerator to allow the bulbs to root and start growing. The temperature should be relatively consistent around 35 to 45 degrees.

When the threat of hard freezes is over in spring (or when you see shoots emerging), move the container to a sunny location and keep the soil moist but not soggy.

Enjoy the beautiful display of spring flowers as they emerge and bloom in succession!
