GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. — The USDA released a new zone map recently, moving much of the metro and southern Minnesota into Zone 5. The Zone 4 line shifted north, as well.
So, what does this mean?
First of all, know your space. Your garden didn’t change overnight with a new map. Many have been growing some Zone 5 perennials for years in south-facing or protected areas. The concrete in the Twin Cities holds heat much more and affects both low and high temperatures.
That said, it’s fun to try new things! Here are a few of my favorite Zone 5 perennials you might want to try. Plus a few suggestions from gardeners on our Facebook page.
Lavender is a big one. It was at the top of my list, and Anette suggested it as well.
Charise suggested blatilla, an orchid.
Red hot poker and Agastache are ones I have grown before and love.
Rose of Sharon is absolutely stunning.
I tried Grecian Windflower once before. It’s an anemone that I’ll surely give another shot.
Heather and passionflower are fun.
And finally another suggestion: Mona is going to try Crocosmia!
Next week, we'll have some Zone 5 tree and shrubs to suggest. New year, new zone, new plants!
