Poinsettias are the undisputed plant of the season. Bobby and I recently spent a day at Bachman's where they grow 70,000 plants a year, in a huge variety of sizes and colors.
Many posted questions on our Grow with KARE Facebook page asking how to keep poinsettias alive, and how to keep them growing until next season.
Bobby reminds us that poinsettias are just like any other house plant. They like bright light but not direct sun. They do not like drafts. They need to be watered only whenever they are dry down to one knuckle on your finger.
Poinsettias do not like to sit in water, so if they have a foil sleeve on them (and many of them do) remove it or poke holes in the foil and put a dish under the plant.
If you want, you can just keep it around as a house plant and then put it out in the summer. Bring it in after summer and when the late fall rolls around the natural lack of light will make your poinsettia bloom again, just in time for the holidays.
Enjoy!
