BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn. — A potentially ten-story car vending machine by Carvana could be built in Brooklyn Center.
According to city documents, Brooklyn Center city council members reviewed a plan submitted by Carvana on Jan. 24. The project proposal would be built near Brooklyn Center High School, near the I-694 and Highway 100 interchange.
If the car vending machine is approved and constructed, it wouldn't serve as a normal dealership. Customers would purchase their car online and go to the Carvana location to pick up the car through the vending machine.
They would receive a large coin to insert into the facility, followed by a retrieval system that brings their car down to ground level, according to the city council documents.
Brooklyn Center Mayor Mike Elliot told council members that he approves of the proposal.
Other council members said they would like to see more information about the security around the facility and licensing issues for a car vending machine.
If approved, the project is expected to bring in 10 jobs to about 3.5 acres of land. This was concerning to council member Lawrence-Anderson, saying one of the city's goals was creating job growth. She told councilmembers it wasn't a lot of jobs for that acreage.
