MAPLE GROVE, Minn — Approximately 3,000 union workers from dozens of Cub Foods locations across the Twin Cities metro will strike this Friday and Saturday after talks on a new contract stalled.
Union representatives announced during a press conference Wednesday that workers will hold a work stoppage between 5:30 a.m. and 10:30 p.m. both Friday, April 7 and Saturday, April 8 due to what they call unfair labor practices. The strike involves employees at 33 corporately-owned Cub stores.
The announcement follows an overwhelming vote Tuesday to authorize a strike. Representatives for UFCW Local 663 says union employees have been working without a contract since March 4.
Members are demanding better wages and better protections for workers, and call negotiations for a new contract "disappointing." They allege that UNFI Corporate Cub Foods interfered with employees "exercising their rights to participate in protected concerted activity" by interrogating employees about union activity and alleged that managers illegally surveyed union activity by logging into union Zoom meetings.
The union has proposed a two-year contract with an increase of $4 per hour for full-time workers, with $2 in the first year and $2 in the second. Negotiators say Cub came back a proposed $2.75 per hour increase over the life of the deal with a $1.50 per hour increase in the first year and a $1.25 increase in the second year.

"In the event there is a strike, we are prepared to implement contingency plans to ensure the continued availability of the products and services our guests have come to count on from Cub."
