How to find a new job

An expert offers advice for finding a new job or maximizing the benefits with the job you already have.

MINNEAPOLIS — The job market has been in the news a lot recently, for a variety of reasons. Friday's February job report showed employers added 275,000 jobs.

While that's good news for the economy, if you're looking for a new opportunity, or just a better salary at your current job, it can feel daunting to try and snag one of those new opportunities for yourself.

1. Identify where to look for a job

Different industries post their job openings in different locations. If you aren't finding what you're looking for on the common job-hunting sites like LinkedIn or Indeed, check out the company's website. You can also reach out to people already working in the industry to ask for their help and recommendations.

2. Consider a career in a high-demand job like nursing, teaching or engineering.

Experts say these jobs are always hiring. Also consider that these industries may have opportunities you may not have considered. For example, hospitals don't only hire nurses, they also need technicians to repair their equipment, and IT people to run their computer databases. Don't limit yourself in your job hunt! Try to think outside the box when searching for your perfect opportunity.

The state of Minnesota maintains a website with more information about "in-demand" jobs statewide. You can check it out here.

3. Do your research before accepting a new salary

Before you sign on the dotted line with your new employer, do your research. There are numerous places online to check what others in a similar location, position and job are paid. This way, when you ask for the money you deserve, you'll have the facts and figures you need to back up your claims.

If your new job isn't offering the money you'd like, you can also counteroffer by asking for more benefits, like more vacation days or a signing bonus.
