Crystal police responded to a report of someone laying on the ground in a parking lot on Friday at about 7:44 p.m., on the 3000 block of Sumter Ave.
When officers arrived they found a 20-year-old man, identified by his family as DeShawn McCabe, with a gunshot wound to his chest.
Officers attempted life-saving measures, but it was determined that McCabe was deceased at the scene.
Lamond and Chauntel McCabe, DeShawn McCabe's parents said as far as they know, DeShawn was meeting someone in Crystal to buy an iPhone for $200 Friday evening.
"My son was found laying in between two vehicles and with a gunshot wound," Lamond said.
Crystal police Deputy Chief Brian Hubbard said the circumstances leading up to the meeting between the gunman and McCabe remain a big part of their investigation.
They added they know at this point that McCabe and the suspect were acquaintances.

"You know who you are and soon enough I'm going to know who you are," Lamond said. "And soon enough too many people are going to know who you are."
Now, with DeShawn Jr. left to raise, the two grandparents said they wanted to remind people of the consequences of their actions. Especially for whoever my be held responsible.
"Although (the suspect) is alive, he'll be in prison for a long time and that's going to affect his mother too, you know?" Chauntel said. "His father and his family."
Police said they have a person of interest and may potentially be looking for other people who could have been involved. No arrests have been made yet.
The medical examiner officially identified McCabe as the victim on Sunday evening.
