ROSEVILLE, Minn. — A construction project on I-35W that's expected to last for three years started Sunday night.
MnDOT says crews will be working to build MnPASS Express Lanes between County Road C in Roseville and Sunset Avenue (County Road 53) on the border of Lino Lakes and Blaine.
The project is called the I-35W North MnPASS project. It is estimated to cost $208 million.
The crews will also be repaving 35W, repaving ramps between I-35W and local roads and fixing bridges, according to MnDOT.
They will also replace bridges over County Road C and County Road I.
One MnPASS Express Lane will be constructed in each direction in the middle of the interstate between County Road C in Roseville and Lexington Avenue (Anoka County Road 17) in Blaine.
The first round of lane closures run on the southbound side of 35W from Lino Lakes to Blaine.
“We’re not going to have any two ramps in a row closed so we can make sure you have access on and off the freeway,” MnDOT spokesman Kent Barnard said.
Until April 7, lanes on northbound I-35W between County Road E2 and I-694 and in both directions of I-35W between the southern Highway 10 interchange and County Road J will be closed from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The second round of closures will start up later this summer in New Brighton and Mounds View.
Starting on Monday, April 8, northbound I-35W will be reduced to two lanes between County Road C and Mounds View Boulevard (County Road 10). The interstate will also be reduced to three lanes between Mounds View Boulevard (County Road 10 ) and the northern Highway 10 interchange.
More closures will begin in late April, MnDOT says.
