8 Minnesota day trips to take this summer

Get out and enjoy the summer - while it lasts!

We all know summers are short here in Minnesota and western Wisconsin, and that's why we want to make the most of it.

To help you get out and enjoy all the beauty and fun our area has to offer, we talked with Explore Minnesota to find out some of the best road trips to take this year!

Here are their suggestions:

1. Hastings

Hastings is located on the Great River Road, a stretch which follows the Mississippi River for 3,000 miles from Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico. It's also home to a TON of bike trails! On the weekends, downtown fills with classic cars for the Saturday Night Cruise-ins. If you're a wine lover, head to Minnesota's first winery, Alexis Bailly Vineyard.

2. Red Wing and Wabasha

From rock-climbing to breweries and wineries, Red Wing and Wabasha have something for everyone. For those who love biking, the Cannon Valley Trail is a popular place to go. There are also a variety of unique boutiques and places to shop!

3. New Ulm and Mankato

The area is home to Minneopa State Park, featuring the beautiful Minneopa Falls and a herd of roaming bison! Several breweries and wineries are also highlights, including August Schell Brewery in New Ulm. It's the second-oldest family owned brewery in the country.

4. Fairbault, Northfield and Owatonna

Fairbault is the home of the famous Tilt-A-Whirl, but these three cities also offer a host of outdoor fun. Check out the Cannon River Wilderness Area or the Jo-ryo-en Japanese Garden in Northfield. There are also several trails for biking and hiking.

5. Taylors Falls

If you're looking for family fun, Taylors Falls is a great place to go. Surrounded by bluffs and high cliffs, Interstate State Park is definitely a highlight of the area! If water sports are your thing, rent a canoe or kayak and paddle the St. Croix. There's also Wild Mountain, a ski area in the winter that features a water park and go-karts in the summer.

6. St. Cloud

With several gardens and parks, St. Cloud is a great outdoor destination this summer. Check out Munsinger Clemens Gardens and stay for the Music in the Gardens series. Quarry Park and Nature Preserve is also a popular spot to take a dip or go for a hike!

7. Mille Lacs

For those who love fishing, look no further than Mille Lacs. Lake Mille Lacs has been named the best smallmouth bass fishing lake in the U.S. by Bassmaster. Fishing not your thing? With several state parks and three golf courses, there are plenty of other ways to have fun!

8. Waconia

With three wineries, two breweries and a distillery, Waconia is your "libation destination." You can also check out some of the farms, orchards and farmers markets for fresh, locally-grown produce.
