A woman caught a 43.5-inch pike on Mille Lacs Lake setting the first northern pike state record in the Department of Natural Resources' catch-and-release category.
Maddy Ogg caught the pike Oct. 6 during a cold day of fishing, she told DNR officials.
“I had to reel fast because the fish swam towards the boat, causing nearly constant slack in the line,” Ogg told DNR officials.
Pikes can usually be very active once in a boat but in Maddy's case the cool temperatures made for a good catch-and-release scenario, according to the DNR.
