Minneapolis gas leak stopped but fix might take 'most of the night'

Fire officials say crews have shut down a gas line with a leak, but they still need to “purge out” the residual gas.

MINNEAPOLIS — Fire officials say crews have shut down a gas line with a leak, but they still need to “purge out” residual gas in what is a very large line.

Earlier Thursday, the gas leak in the 2300 block of 15th Ave. S. caused an apartment building to be evacuated.

Officials estimated about 30 residents were evacuated from their homes. They said the Red Cross helped provide people with food and water.

Around 8:30 p.m. Thursday, many residents returned to their homes.

Officials say the leak came from a 24-inch pipe with high pressure and a "tremendous amount of gas."

A large area was blocked off in the Phillips neighborhood.
