Are black bear sightings becoming more common in Metro area?

The DNR says the black bear range is expanding south and west.

A Black Bear sighting near the North Heights Lutheran Church in Arden Hills is the talk of the town.

That includes nearby Arden Hills Townhomes.

"The bear has been a subject of some interest," said Sue O'Brien.

She sent out an email to everyone warning them of the bear.

"We weren't counting on black bears," said O'Brien.

Bear sightings might be more common than people might think. The Minnesota DNR says black bear range has been slowly expanding South and West.

"In the state we've seen bears move over a 100 miles in the Spring and Fall," said Spencer Rettler at the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife at the University of Minnesota.

In April a DNR officers shot and killed a bear in North St. Paul that officers say posed an immediate threat.

KARE-11 was also sent photos from Big Lake where a driver says he hit a bear on Highway 15 Tuesday.

Rettler says homeowners should be securing any food sources.

"Bird feeders, any pet food that's out there, Unsecured Garbage," said Rettler.

The DNR says another important reminder is to leave the bear alone if you see one and let it pass through.
