MINNEAPOLIS —
Cold weather gets a bad rap most places, where single digits draw more groans than cheers.
That’s not the case on Lake Minnetonka this weekend where hockey players are cheering on the cold.
“This year we had a really good freeze,” hockey tournament organizer J. Lindsay says.
Every year the weather plays a role at the North American Pond Hockey Tournament.
“It’s always something you have to deal with as organizers and as players on the ice,” Lindsay says.
Believe it or not, single digit temps are actually a good thing.
“It makes good ice,” Lindsay explains. “Players love it.”
Players would rather have cold than slush, which has happened a time or two over the years.
“We’ve had rain. We’ve had freezing temps, sunny days, we just roll with whatever comes our way.”
Players deal with the cold by staying active.
“Probably 45 seconds in the game you sort of forget about it,” one player says.
Fans deal with the cold by cheering them on.
“It’s never too cold for moms,” a group of fans shouts.
This year’s tournament is just warming up. The competition runs through this Sunday.
