Community remembers brothers killed in silo accident, prays for child's recovery

“It’s a very deep loss for our community, and we continue to pray for them in this time,” Vanderweyst said

MILLERVILLE, Minn. — A small community north of Alexandria packed church pews on Monday night to remember two brothers who died after breathing in deadly fumes from a silo – and pray for one of their sons as he remains in the hospital.

Steve Boesl, 49, died at the scene Saturday and brother Curt Boesl, 47, passed away later at the hospital. Curt’s son, 12-year-old Alex, was airlifted to Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis.

Monday night’s vigil, held at Seven Dolors Church, lasted about a half-hour and drew an overwhelming response.

“Everyone that knows them and knows the family and has grown up with them, knows that they are a caring family. They care for the community.” Bob Rehovsky said. “We are just going to hold each other tight and get through this.”

Friends of the Boesl family said Steven and Curt came from a large family and grew up in this area near Alexandria. Monday’s vigil drew a large presence from first responders. Curt was an assistant fire chief, and Steven was also involved in the department at one time.

Pastor Peter Vanderweyst said the community held an event Sunday night as well as they continue to support the family through their grief. They are also keeping young Alex in their thoughts during the holidays.

“It’s a very deep loss for our community, and we continue to pray for them in this time,” Vanderweyst said, “especially for their widows as they have to continue their daily life.”
