Salvation Army officials wonder if 'Saint Grand' is back

The bundled bills raise a question: Has the mystery philanthropist known as Saint Grand struck again?

COON RAPIDS, Minn. — The discovery of $1,000 in bundled bills inside a red kettle in Coon Rapids has the Salvation Army wondering whether - and let's be honest, hoping that - a mysterious philanthropist has returned for a  13th consecutive holiday season.

Salvation Army officials say the donation was discovered Tuesday, and while they can't be sure, the rolled-up bills are similar to those that have popped up in kettles across the Twin Cities each holiday season since 2011. In that year a handful of $1,000 donations were dropped in various locations, with the consistent amount of the gifts earning the unknown donor the nickname "Saint Grand."

Despite 13 years of public generosity (and public drop-offs), the identity of Saint Grand remains a mystery.

“A visit from Saint Grand is always a highlight for us during our kettle season, though we’ll never know for sure if it’s the same generous individual,” said Lt. Colonel Randall Polsley, Salvation Army Northern Division commander. “Regardless, we’re always grateful for the gifts from Saint Grand and all kettle donors who support our programs for those in need.”

Tuesday's donation comes as the Salvation Army's 2023 red kettle campaign winds down to its scheduled conclusion on Dec. 23. Polsley says the organization has collected 68% of its $1.9 million goal and is asking those who are able to consider giving generously at any collection location across the Twin Cities. He adds that donations made at red kettles stay in the community where they are collected, and help to provide assistance during the holidays and all year around.

Volunteer ringers are also needed. Visit the Salvation Army website to sign up.
