MINNEAPOLIS — KARE 11 and the TEGNA Foundation, the charitable foundation sponsored by TEGNA Inc. (NYSE: TGNA), have awarded seven area nonprofit organizations community grants totaling $32,980.
Community grants in the Twin Cities area are aimed at alleviating community concerns such as homelessness, food insecurity, education, programs for at-risk youth, and more.
Among the grant recipients are:
- Assistance League of Minneapolis-St. Paul: The grant will help fund educational programs for the 2022-2023 school year by providing basic necessities like clothes, food, school supplies, books, and more. This will give more students in-school assistance to help them concentrate, participate, and learn.
- Good in the Hood: Funds will be used for the Shoe Away Hunger program to provide footwear to those in need. It will also be used for SoleCare for Souls which free medical foot care to more than 1,400 unsheltered and hurting people each year. Twenty-two percent of these clients have diabetes. Foot care is critical for those with diabetes.
- The Lift Garage: Funds will help clients retain and/or re-establish economic stability and housing. Car repairs are a common trigger for cascading financial difficulties that often lead to eviction and homelessness. This grant will help provide low-cost repairs for individuals with cost-burdened households, lack of living wage and racial disparity in housing and employment.
- PRISM: This grant will be able to provide 1,000,000 pounds of food to 6,500 individuals. This will help 1,557 households build healthy, stable lives by providing outreach and referrals.
- Relate: Funds would be used to provide school-based prevention and early intervention mental health services. Services focus on reduction in symptoms, improved well-being, and improved capacity for functioning in school. Clinicians of color are placed in schools with a higher number of students of color whenever possible.
- Tasks Unlimited: This grant will help with the Bridging Emergency Needs project and the Client Emergency Needs Fund. This provides flexible one-time funding for people with serious mental illness experiencing a financial crisis for reasons beyond their control. Money will also be used to stock a new emergency clothes shelf at Tasks NE Outreach & Opportunity Center, a drop-in center in NE MPLS. On average, 14 people stop in Tasks Unlimited a day asking for food services or help.
- World Savvy: Funds would be used for more educators to be equipped with the K2A program. Students will identify an issue they care about, build knowledge and understanding of a way to solve it, and support the creation of informed solutions to tackle it. The students will then share this with the larger community and consider ways they can personally take informed action globally. An example is a middle schooler doing this model researched education resources on period poverty and how it impacts marginalized communities. They raised funds to provide menstrual supplies to several shelters in the Twin Cities. Other students have addressed issues such as clean water access, homelessness, creating welcoming communities for immigrants, discrimination of Muslim girls in sports, and encouraging youth civic engagement.
“KARE 11 is extremely proud to support these TEGNA Foundation recipients. The non-profit organizations receiving these grants play a vital role in assisting and educating the Twin Cities community,” said Bill Dallman, President and General Manager of KARE 11.
“We are proud to support KARE 11 as they address critical community needs in the Twin Cities and surrounding areas,” said Dave Lougee, president, and CEO of TEGNA. “Our stations are committed to investing in local nonprofit organizations through grant funding and bringing awareness to critical local needs.”
