Officer Arik Matson is father to two daughters, ages 7 and 5.

Arik Matson, the Waseca police officer who was shot in the head while responding to a suspicious person call, gave his wife, Megan, a wedding anniversary gift she won't soon forget.

According to the family's CaringBridge site, Matson was able to take a deep breath and say, "Happy Anniversary, Megan. I love you."

Matson, 32, recently left North Memorial Health Hospital in Robbinsdale and is at an unspecified facility for longer-term care.

"He's working on his speech and making his words clear, but it does wear him out," added Nicole Matson, Arik's sister-in-law in the CaringBridge post.

Arik Matson was shot Jan. 6 while he and other officers were responding to a report of a suspicious person in a backyard. Tyler Janovsky, 37, is charged with multiple counts, including three counts of first-degree attempted murder.

Janovsky appeared in court on Tuesday where a bond was set at $3 million dollars no conditions and $2.5 million with conditions for the charges of Attempted Murder. Additionally, bail is set at $500,000 with no conditions and $250,000 with conditions for charges related to the possession and manufacture of Meth. A motive hasn't been disclosed but a search warrant affidavit said Janovsky, who has a violent past, “had discussed his desire and intent to commit ‘suicide by cop.’”
