1 dead following early morning shooting in south Minneapolis

As responding officers attempted to save the victim just after 3 a.m. near E. Lake St. and 13th Ave. S., additional squads were summoned to handle a hostile crowd.

MINNEAPOLIS — One person is dead after a shooting on the near south side of Minneapolis early Monday.

The incident unfolded on 13th Avenue South just off East Lake Street just after 3 a.m. While Minneapolis police say arriving squads discovered a man lying on the sidewalk suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound. Officers immediately began lifesaving treatment but had to call in backup to control "an uncooperative and hostile crowd."

Members of the crowd were dispersed, allowing paramedics and additional first responders into the scene. Despite their efforts, the victim was declared dead on the scene. On Wednesday he was identified by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner as 52-year-old Rodney Bernard Cooper of Brooklyn Park. The official cause of death was listed as multiple gunshot wounds.

Preliminary information indicates there was a group in the area just before shots were fired.

KARE 11's Audrey Russo reported seeing seven or eight evidence markers on the street and sidewalk in front of Christ Church International, which frequently indicates the presence of spent shell casings.

There are currently no suspects in custody. Anyone with information on the fatal shooting or who is responsible is asked to contact CrimeStoppers via the organization's website, or by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

This is a developing story. KARE 11 will update it as additional details become available.
