Minneapolis Police arrested and charged a young man Wednesday for his alleged involvement in a mass shooting that injured nine people in south Minneapolis in Aug. 2023.

According to a criminal complaint, on Aug. 20 a vehicle drove up to the intersection of East Franklin and Chicago Avenue where a crowd of people had gathered and were playing dice. Witnesses say two men got out of the car - one holding a pistol, the other a fully automatic rifle - and fired 42 rounds, hitting at least nine people. Four of the victims were juveniles, while another was a grandmother who was there with her 8-year-old granddaughter.

Investigators recovered surveillance video that captured part of the getaway vehicle's license plate and it was traced to the guardian of 18-year-old Jaden Trejaun Butcher. Records show the vehicle was tied to another attempted homicide, and had fled police after an incident in New Hope.

Two days later the vehicle was spotted at the home of Butcher's brother, and the suspect was seen getting into the Toyota and driving off. A state trooper attempted to stop him but Butcher fled at a high rate of speed and a decision was made not to pursue.

On Monday, Feb. 26 - six months after the mass shooting and the incident where he fled authorities - Butcher showed up at a hospital after being wounded in a shooting that involved 5 guns and 100 discharged cartridge casings. He was taken into custody and on Wednesday, prosecutors charged Butcher with nine counts of attempted first-degree murder and one count of fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle.

The criminal complaint says Butcher represents "an extreme danger to the public," and prosecutors are requesting a high bail to reflect that.
