Nine people were wounded, none of them fatally, in a hailstorm of bullets fired outside a market in south Minneapolis on Aug. 20, 2023.

MINNEAPOLIS — More than a year later, another teenager has been arrested and charged in a mass shooting that injured nine people at a busy intersection in south Minneapolis.

Prosecutors charged an 18-year-old man from Minneapolis with nine counts of attempted first-degree murder in connection with the highly-publicized shooting on Aug. 20, 2023, outside the Minneapolis Market.

According to court documents, he was arrested this month on a weapons charge.

At the time of the mass shooting, he was 17 and has been charged as a juvenile, however, prosecutors intend to have him tried as an adult.

He's currently in custody and his next court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 5.

Court records show that on Aug. 20, 2023, a vehicle drove up to the intersection of East Franklin and Chicago Avenue just before 6 p.m. where a crowd had gathered and played dice. Witnesses say two men got out of the car — one holding a pistol, the other a fully automatic rifle — and fired 42 rounds, hitting at least nine people. Four of the victims were juveniles, while another was a grandmother who was there with her 8-year-old granddaughter.

Investigators recovered surveillance video that captured part of the getaway vehicle's license plate and was traced to the guardian of Jaden Trejaun Butcher, who was 18 then. Records show the car was tied to another attempted homicide, and had fled police after an incident in New Hope.

Two days later the vehicle was spotted at the home of Butcher's brother and the suspect was seen getting into the Toyota and driving off. A state trooper attempted to stop him but Butcher fled at a high rate of speed and a decision was made not to pursue.

Six months after the mass shooting, Butcher showed up at a hospital after being wounded in a shooting that involved five guns and 100 discharged cartridge casings. He was taken into custody and prosecutors charged Butcher with nine counts of attempted first-degree murder and one count of fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle.
