MINNEAPOLIS — Three minors accused of being connected to recent crime sprees in Minneapolis were arrested and taken into custody Thursday, according to the city's police department.
MPD said two boys, ages 15 and 16, and a 17-year-old girl had allegedly been involved in several carjackings, robberies and auto thefts throughout February and into March. The department added that "concerned parents" played a role in identifying the teens.
"I am thankful to the families who have stepped up and are working on behalf of their children to ensure that the right actions are taken, and their children receive the support they need," said Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara, in a statement. "This cooperation may very well save these kids' lives.”
O'Hara also acknowledged the work of investigators, saying they worked "around the clock" to find those responsible.
“These violent crimes take seconds to commit, take a team of investigators dozens of hours to process, and can leave victims with lasting trauma”, he said. “To end this cycle and to bring an end to the senseless violence in our communities, the MPD needs everyone in the process to help hold these individuals accountable."
The news of Thursday's arrests comes after the police department activated its new robbery pattern response protocol, in which officers assigned to non-emergency calls are reassigned to investigate recurring patterns of crime.
