MAPLE GROVE, Minn. — More than 1,200 miles from where he was shot to death Wednesday morning, new details have emerged about possible threats made to UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson and his residence in Maple Grove.
On Thursday afternoon, Maple Grove police provided KARE 11 with several "call-for-service" summaries, revealing bomb and suspicious activity threats, at least one of them dating back to 2018. Police said the latter investigation did not yield proof of criminal activity.
"In response to call-for-service data requests, there is one reported suspicious activity incident on file with the Maple Grove Police Department in 2018 at the Thompson residence. The incident was cleared with no criminal activity detected," read a press release from MGPD.
The press release said the MGPD said it was contacted by the New York Police Department (NYPD) around 8 a.m. Wednesday to notify Thompson's family of his death.
"... The Maple Grove Police Department was requested by the New York City Police Department (NYPD) to notify the family of Brian Thompson, of his tragic homicide in New York City," it said.
"We extend our deepest condolences to the Thompson family during this difficult time. Maple Grove investigators are in contact with the NYPD, who is leading the investigation."
The documents obtained by KARE show it was about 7 p.m. on Dec. 4 that MGPD was alerted to a bomb threat at both Thompson's home and the nearby home of his wife, who had been living separately from him at the time. The threat came via an email reportedly obtained by city officials.
Maple Grove PD said its officers, with help from the Minneapolis Bomb Squad and Hennepin County Sheriff's Office, determined those threats to be a hoax but the investigation into the matter remains active.
Thompson, CEO of Minnesota-based UnitedHealthcare, was fatally shot outside a New York City hotel Wednesday morning while attending a company investors conference. As of Thursday afternoon, the suspect remains at large.
KARE 11 crews were at the Thompson residence in Maple Grove Thursday and observed a statement on behalf of the family. It read:
"We are shattered to hear about the senseless killing of our beloved Brian. Brian was an incredibly loving, generous, talented man who truly lived life to the fullest and touched so many lives. Most importantly, Brian was an incredibly loving father to our two sons and will be greatly missed. We appreciate your condolences and request complete privacy as our family moves through this difficult time."
