Children found safe in western Wisconsin after reported abduction

Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald said the kids - ages 6 and 3 - were abducted Wednesday afternoon in Ashland, Wis.

BARRON, Wis. — Two young children are safe and a man is in jail after an alleged abduction in northern Wisconsin Wednesday.

Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald said his department was notified around 3:30 p.m. after the youngsters - ages 6 and 3 - were reported abducted from Ashland, Wis., on the shores of Lake Superior. Ashland police told their counterparts in Barron County that the children might be in an area near the L.E. Scout Reservation near the town of Haugen.

Deputies responded to the area and launched a search with help from the Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI), the Wisconsin DNR and staff from the scout camp.

While the search was being conducted, new information indicated that the kids and their abductor might be in Barronett. With assistance from the Washburn County Sheriff's Office, the suspect vehicle was located, and a 30-year-old man from Drummond was taken into custody without incident. He is being held in the Barron County Jail pending formal charges.

The children were located and taken to Mayo Hospital to be checked out before they were reunited with family.
